Not far from Lyon is the medieval, walled village of Pérouges. It’s name is derived from Perugia, Italy, a mountain town dating back to the Etruscans. Legend has it that French visitors to Perugia returned to France and then founded the town at least 1000 years ago. It is recognized as one of the most beautiful French villages, see Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Human presence dates at least to 1500. For more see my entry at One of the most picturesque villages.

A Magic Summer: Loving Vincent
Scenes from our boat travels in the beautiful countryside of the Netherlands. Small towns, harbors, rural scenes. Original art for sale.
One Lane Canal III
This is based on the view from our boat as we traversed the picturesque, tiny canal that bifurcates Wegea, Netherlands.
One Lane Canal II
Rich with charm, Wergea is a tiny village in Friesland, We passed through on our boat Viking via their one lane canal, the only canal in the village. Tranquility, harmony of architecture, bikes on the lanes. In good weather the Netherlands is one of the best places on earth.
Reeds and a Stork
We have been mooring in the deep countryside of Friesland, a province of the Netherlands. Reeds, still used for making thatched roofs, line the canals. Among the wildlife are storks, who nest on the tops of trees. Their black tails help make them more visible from a distance. They have even made some special nesting spots for these large birds.
Duurstede Castle
Duurstede Castle is in the town of Wijk bij Duurstede in the Netherlands. The castle dates from the 13th century.
Tkalciceva-Street, Zagreb at Night, watercolor
Zagreb is a lively city at night. The crowd is generally younger, in the 20’s and 30’s or thereabouts. They populate the bars especially, and the eateries do not seem to be suffering. There’s a lot of interesting architecture.
Church on the Sambre
Another in the series of paintings from a summer on the canals of Northern France, this ancient church on the Sambre River sits right on the river beneath a tree filled slope.
Castle on the Sambre II
Aboard our boat Viking we cruised the canals and rivers of Northern France and Belgium. Chateau, forests, hills, water scenes at every turn. I depicted scenes such as this in a style mixing realism, impressionism and expressionism. This is a second version of this gorgeous and charming bit of history on the Sambre.
