There are many thatched roofs in the northeastern area of the Netherlands. I decided to let this one veer towards realism to give the viewer a sense of what being on the boat is like in this country. We were moored around the curve thus the canal appears off to the side.

Continuing with my efforts in charcoal, this is a winter scene in the Netherlands.
We’ve traveled extensively on the canals of the Netherlands. Not long ago these canals froze every winter and to this day the Dutch people are over-represented in the Winter Olympic speed skating events.
This canal is located near ‘s-Hertogenbosch. People call it Den Bosch. There are some 160,000 residents. It is the capital of the province of North Brabant and its fourth largest city by population in the Netherlands. It is famous for the Bossche bol – called chocoladebol locally. It is a puff pastry filled with delicious thick whipped cream and covered with chocolate.

This is based on the view from our boat as we traversed the picturesque, tiny canal that bifurcates Wegea, Netherlands.

We have been mooring in the deep countryside of Friesland, a province of the Netherlands. Reeds, still used for making thatched roofs, line the canals. Among the wildlife are storks, who nest on the tops of trees. Their black tails help make them more visible from a distance. They have even made some special nesting spots for these large birds.
